Inside/Outside - Outside/Inside & Related Works

The title itself suggests inversion — the permeability of psychological and physical boundaries, and the shifting relationship between viewer and subject.

Inside / Outside – Outside / Inside (2021) extends my modernist investigation into a postmodern context, using the shifting boundary between interior and exterior space to explore perception, memory, and the act of looking. Rather than engaging in reductionist modernism, the painting develops a layered visual dialogue grounded in observation and realist compositional structure.

In children’s earliest artworks, we readily grant broad emotional and perceptual freedom, fascinated by how they interpret the world. Adults rarely produce true “children’s art”; at best they approximate its spontaneity. Adult realist painting—particularly within American realism and contemporary figurative practice—is often received within a narrower interpretive frame. Within this dynamic, Inside / Outside – Outside / Inside becomes one of my most direct examinations of how memory and observation shape visual meaning.

This inquiry connects to themes visible in Across Decades – Select Highlights, where interior and exterior spaces recur as fluid perceptual conditions rather than fixed categories. I often think of this relationship as standing inside a cave, looking outward while remaining aware of the recess behind, or searching water for a fish only to encounter one’s own reflection against the sky—an interplay central to modernist and postmodern explorations of perception.

The juxtaposition of objects across different spatial registers—especially the tension between inside and outside—appears in my earliest works and continues throughout the related pieces shown here. In many paintings the alternate space is implied rather than depicted, functioning almost like a daydream suspended between states of awareness.
