A pairing of function and ornament, presence and suggestion
When I painted Keys and Beads, I was thinking about how everyday objects carry meanings we rarely articulate. Keys and beads are familiar things, but they occupy very different emotional registers. The keys have sharply cut edges — precise, functional, and directional. They imply access, boundaries, decisions, and the unseen spaces they open or protect. Their purpose is defined by their shape.
The beads, by contrast, are rounded and gentle. Their appeal comes from touch, rhythm, and ornament rather than utility. They don’t unlock anything; they adorn. Their softness counters the keys’ exactness, and that contrast was central to the painting.
I wanted to capture these objects in plain sight but also layer them with associations that reveal themselves slowly. The longer you look, the more the pairing feels like a quiet conversation between two kinds of meaning — one practical, one emotional. The reflective surfaces, the subtle tonal shifts, and the way the objects sit together create a composition that is simple on the surface but psychologically open.
This piece continues my exploration of how small, functional objects can become symbolic when isolated, observed, and given room to resonate.
