“Ivy Beside Figure” (1981) introduces a more personal, intimate atmosphere within my ongoing exploration of the human fragment. A partial view of a hip and right arm appears on the right, the figure seated on a white cloth whose folds extend outward. The body leans subtly against a pillow, barely visible behind, grounding the fragment in a quiet, lived‑in space.

From the lower left, a dense cluster of ivy leaves pushes forward, rising beside the thigh and activating the foreground. The space feels both anonymous and inhabited—its neutrality disrupted by the ivy’s fullness and energy, as if the plant has arrived there by chance, yet belongs completely.

This 20th‑century engagement with the fragment presents a challenge I welcome: to evoke emotional presence both internally and externally through only part of the figure. As in “Ivy Between Legs” and other works where the figure intersects with still‑life elements, the joy lies in discovering how a fragment can carry the weight of a whole—how it can shape space, mood, and meaning through what is shown and what is withheld.
