In the painting Darts and Necklace, I was thinking about how simple objects can create their own visual drama when placed in a precise geometric rhythm. The man’s cross necklace and the darts rest on a thin piece of matboard whose sharp corner angles into the scene, casting a clean shadow that becomes part of the composition. The darts point toward the upper left, creating a diagonal pull that plays against the stillness of the necklace. I wanted the contrasts to stay controlled — light against shadow, shape against enriched surface, line against curve — so the tension would come from structure rather than the tease of a narrative. This was a period when I was deeply engaged with surface, balance, and the graphic clarity of modernist still life, and this painting reflects that focus completely.
