Reflections (Intrusion)
Reflections (Intrusion) oil on canvas - 36” x 48”
1983
A large-scale oil on canvas that explores the emotional senses between human presence, surrounding objects and surface and depth. The reflective motif suggests both literal and psychological mirroring. (See other works on page.)
Painted in “83 but rooted in 1970s modernist figuration, the work balances the formality of abstraction with human presence, echoing contemporaneous explorations and questions of perception and identity.
For Richard L Tuck the idea of reflections becomes a metaphor for self-examination, the duality of inner and outer life, for questioning, for deception, and the instability of perception. Intrusion implies another’s view.
Tuck sees reflections as aspects of time and place- the fixation of gazing into water. You’re not the only one reflected but the one looking. (Man in Mirror -on this page)
